Caupenne Castle

France is a centrally administered state with subdivisons in 22 regions and 96 departments. The Aquitaine region covers 5 departments and through its long drawn out Atlantic coast is located on the intersection point of the Norway – Spain / Portugal / North Africa Axis as well as the Atlantic – Mediterranean Axis.

The landscapes of this region could not be more varied: From the delta mouth of the Gironde (Surface area of 241 square miles), 105 miles embankment along the shore and 6.2 miles in width up to the Spanish border with the mountain range of the Pyrenees there is a continuous beach of over 155 miles in length with a unique dune landscape; the basin of Arcachon is an "inland sea" of 58 square miles. The impressive coastal landscape with a unique microclimate with 2,471,100 acres forms the largest coherent forest area of Europe.

The administrative corner points are the cities Bordeaux (Gironde), Périgueux (Dordogne), Mont-de-Marsan (Landes), Agen (Lot-et-Garonne) and Pau (Pyrénées-Atlantiques).
Caupenne is situated in the Landes; here are a few basic details:

Our castle built in the 17th century, St. Martin`s Church (12th century) as well as the mayor`s office (with once a separate class for girls and boys as well as the teacher`s flat) from the 19th century with just a few houses make up the actual centre of the village.

Our property covers a park-like area of almost 15 acres, which of course is completely enclosed; the main approach road is secured with an automatic gate. The entire guest area is in the south wing – also guest pool is aligned to the south. The parking area for vehicles is at the back of the north wing.

Purely statistically we have 2000 hours of sunshine per year; good news for evening and night people: there are more daylight hours compared with London and this is particularly positive in the winter months. There is a time difference of one hour. The average temperatures are very moderate as they are influenced by the Gulf Stream: the lowest average temperature is 50°F (10°C) in January and the highest 77°F (25.2°C) in August – however also here the climatic change has become apparent in the last 20 years...

The journey is possible by air, rail or road – with sufficient time a journey via rivers and canals can likewise be mastered.

A flight from London Stansted to Pau or Biarritz via Ryanair takes approx. 3 hours. The nearest airport is Pau 31 miles, Biarritz is 56 miles away and Bordeaux is 112 miles.

Train connections from London to Dax take about 8 – 9 hours.
The journey by car can be planned individually but one must remember that France is a very extensive country.
