Welcome to the Landes
Le littoral atlantique - la Côte d'Argent.
The department Landes with the administrative seat in Mont-de-Marsan
is situated in the middle west of the region of Aquitaine. Landscape,
culture and cultural landscape have an unusual diverse significance the
Landes (heath landscape):
The silver coast with over 62 miles of finest sand beach,
dunes and pine forests is an experience of its own – not only for
sporty people.
The hinterland covers – known not least for the
wine growing – landscapes such as Chalosse, Tursan and Bas Armagnac.
At the same time one can find here impressive evidence of the history
of the earth and mankind: settlement in the Stone Age, monuments of the
Romans, traditions from the migration of the peoples, churches of the
Middle Ages...
Three main routes of the Jacob Way cross the department;
an additional route leads along the Atlantic coast. Caupenne is situated
on one of the established bypaths to Santiago di Compostella.

In the Landes traditional Roman seriousness combines with Iberian lightheartedness.
The Gasconen are aware of the quality of life of their landscape which
formally invites one to live and work, to relax and visit.
Feasts, festivals, concerts, theatre performances, dance, exhibitions
... offer every year (particulary in the time from June to September)
a manifold and varied cultural programme – in our rural area churches,
former abbeys, and market places also become stages for high-class artists.
Completely unspoiled and undistored pleasures arise from eating and drinking.
The region is not only a paradise for the lovers of good wine between
Bordeaux up to the slopes of the Baise, from Bergerac to the hills of
the Irouléguy; also the Armagnac is one of the "native"
drinks...
The treats continue to extend from lamb and beef to poultry (in particular
duck) to Bayonne ham, cheese, fish, oysters and other seafood and asparagus,
truffles, pepper pods, melons and flat mushrooms, prunes... Caramelized
cakes, cocoa chocolate and other sweet things round off the native gourmet
supply.
